HAIR EXTENSION AFTERCARE
Since we wear hair extensions almost every day of the week, maintaining their fit and quality is essential. Follow these easy care tips to keep your hair extensions looking and feeling their best.
Washing
Wash your hair extensions as infrequently as hygienically possible to prevent fading, damage, and conserve water. Washing will remove moisture, referring to natural elements like hair oil and decrease longevity. When you do decide to wash your hair extensions, remember these simple rules:
Washing once a month may be considered excessive; ideally, it is recommended to wash no more frequently than every 3-4 months.
Use your Hair Extension Hanger to protect tracks, save time, and simplify washing. Watch our tutorial video for guidance.
Prior to washing, gently comb through your hair extensions with a wide-tooth comb.
Use hair extension-specific products.
Be cautious not to wet the tracks where clips are attached to prevent issues like shedding, peeling or snapping due to water absorption.
Apply a small amount of product to the mid-lengths and ends, avoiding the tracks.
Instead of shampoo, consider using conditioner or a moisture mask to refresh your hair extensions between washes to maintain their natural oils. Shampoo removes natural oils, which can affect the colour and texture, especially for darker shades.
Thoroughly rinse your hair extensions to prevent product build-up.
After washing, apply a hair mask and gently comb through to restore natural oils. Seal in moisture with 'RemySoft BlueMax Protective Sealer.'
Air dry your hair extensions to maintain their quality and create our signature texture, avoiding towel-drying or blow-drying.
Additional Tips
- Hang your hair extensions outside to air them out between washes for a refreshing effect.
- Hair colour fading may vary due to hair porosity, which is determined by genetics. This is a natural occurrence and is not considered a defect.
- Occasionally use a clarifying shampoo to remove product build-up and maintain manageability. Apply minimal product to prevent heaviness and difficulty in styling.
- Regular moisture masks are necessary for maintenance if you shampoo and heat style your hair frequently.
Styling
Minimise heat styling to prevent damage and extend the lifespan of your hair extensions.
Indian hair holds curls well due to its naturally wavy texture. Consider changing your style with heat every 3–4 months.
Utilise your Hair Extension Hanger for styling assistance. View our tutorial video for guidance.
Avoid applying direct heat on the tracks to prevent damage.
Limit heat styling to 120 °C, using a heat-protectant formulated for human hair extensions. Excessive heat may alter the colour, so to prevent this, please use tools with a temperature control.
Explore alternative styling methods like heat-free curlers or embracing natural textures.
Take extra care of the hair extension ends, as they are the oldest part and prone to dryness and splitting. Avoid using heat on the ends.
Trim the hair extension ends regularly to maintain freshness and health, similar to natural hair.
Avoid using a radiator, as it can damage and weaken the hair extensions.
Note: Curl retention in human hair extensions varies based on hair genetics.
Brushing
Hold the hair extensions below the tracks and gently detangle from the ends upward.
Avoid brushing the hair extensions while attached to your hair to prevent damage, including root thinning or loss.
Aggressive brushing or brushing while wet can cause shedding and track snapping.
Minimise static electricity by avoiding plastic and metal brushes; opt for boar-bristle brushes and wooden combs.
Static hair is common and not a manufacturing fault; use anti-static sheets to neutralise the charge and restore a natural look.
Products
Use gentle products specifically formulated for human hair extensions.
Hair extensions lack natural oils and are delicate since they are no longer nourished by a scalp, which provides oils, vitamins, and minerals. Therefore, it is essential to handle them with care.
To prevent product build-up, minimise product usage, and avoid hair spray and oils.
Oils possess adhesive properties that can block cuticles and act as sealants, trapping moisture and leading to tangling and dryness. Consequently, applying oils may exacerbate dryness, especially if your hair extensions are already lacking moisture.
Avoid using products on your hair, body, or face that contain chemicals that can alter the pigment of your hair extensions, such as sunscreens containing Avobenzone, tanning products, and certain creams.
Colouring
We highly advise against altering the colour of your hair extensions, including the use of permanent or semi-permanent dyes, toning, or sprays, as they have already undergone a colouring process. Altering the colour may yield unpredictable results due to the genetic composition of the hair, and we cannot guarantee the outcome if you proceed with colouring. To maintain longevity and quality, it's best to avoid further colouring treatments.
If you decide to colour against our advice, follow these tips:
- Use your Hair Extension Hanger to assist, avoiding the tracks.
- Rinse hair extensions to remove any product barriers.
- Avoid bleaching.
- Test a patch first to check results.
Cutting
Split ends are a natural occurrence and may develop on human hair extensions. If necessary, you can trim the ends of the hair extensions.
Storage
Keep your hair extensions clean to avoid product buildup, which can damage the hair over time. Use your Hair Extension Hanger or Storage Bag with netting, ensuring they remain tangle-free and protected. Store them away from direct sunlight to prevent colour fading.
Sleeping
We strongly advise against sleeping with your hair extensions clipped in, as it can cause damage to your natural hair and scalp, potentially leading to hair thinning or loss.
Swimming
Avoid exposing your hair extensions to chlorine or saltwater, as they can degrade the quality of the hair and may contribute to shedding if they penetrate the area where the clips are attached to the tracks.
FACT: Chlorine and saltwater strip the hair extensions of oils, colour, and moisture, leaving them dry, discoloured, and difficult to manage.
Weather
Hair extensions require more attention in warmer climates due to the sun's potential to fade or alter their colour, cause breakage, reduce elasticity, create split ends, and diminish shine.
TIP: Regularly apply a UV protection product specifically formulated for hair extensions.
Avoid wearing hair extensions in extreme weather conditions, such as during storms, as wind and rain can lead to frizz, tangling, and matting.
Maintaining Colour Quality
Factors that contribute to altering the colour of your hair extensions include:
- Oxidation: Hair extensions, like all natural hair, can oxidise over time when exposed to air and environmental elements. This can cause the colour to alter slightly overtime, sometimes resulting in a ginger or brassy tone.
- Heat Damage: Using heat styling tools on your hair extensions can cause the colour to change from the heat, particularly at the ends where the hair is often the most vulnerable.
- Product Buildup: Certain hair products, especially those with sulphates or other harsh chemicals, can interact with the colour of your hair extensions and cause discolouration.
- Sun Exposure: Exposure to sunlight can lighten the hair colour and sometimes create a brassy or ginger tinge, particularly in lighter shades like blonde.
- Water Quality: Hard water or water with high levels of certain minerals can lead to a change in hair colour over time. This is especially true if the water has high iron content, which can leave a reddish or ginger tinge.
- Improper Care: Not following the recommended care instructions for your hair extensions can lead to colour changes. For example, washing your hair extensions too frequently or using unsuitable products can affect the colour.
- Tan: Tanning products applied to the skin can brush onto your hair extensions, causing a ginger tinge on the ends due to chemical reactions.
- Products: Shampoos, conditioners, body cream, tanning products, and especially sunscreens, contain chemicals that can alter the pigment of the hair. Be particularly cautious with sunscreens containing Avobenzone, as it will cause discolouration to your hair extensions.
